Senior Capstone - Split Flap Display
University of Cincinnati
For my final project at University of Cincinnati, I wanted to create a piece of automated machinery that incorporated closed loop automation. While thinking about what I wanted to build, I saw a movie with a split flap display in an old train station, and I thought about how those boards needed everything from motors with encoders, sensors, logic control, error analysis, and programming. This project also had the added bonus that I could lean on my background in additive and subtractive manufacturing to make modules that were affordable and easily mass produced. In the end, each unit had 68 pieces leading to the whole project having over 816 pieces, not including wiring or alphanumeric decals.
